A Unique Social Investment

The Cochabamba Project is a fully trading Industrial Provident Society for the benefit of the community, working in equal partnership with poor smallholders on the fringes of the Bolivian Amazon to establish and maintain a profitable and sustainable community-based forestry enterprise as part of a wider project known as ArBolivia.

The society's members are socially motivated investors who share our vision and provide the finance needed for local smallholders to plant native species of tropical hardwoods as an alternative to unsustainable farming practices.

We invite you to join us as a member and help fund the project to breakeven when timber revenues will more than cover operational costs. Although your primary motive should be social, this is very much an INVESTMENT, not a gift, and we offer the prospect of a full return of capital and a modest rate of interest each year*, which at present is rolled up until you withdraw your shares.

CORDAID (Holanda)

Investing in entrepreneurship in developing countries provides people with an income, stimulates the economy, and strengthens flourishing communities.

Capital is required by entrepreneurs, farmers, developers of housing projects, and health clinics to invest in their businesses. They also need savings accounts and insurances to cover setbacks. However, entrepreneurs in poor countries often do not have access to these facilities. Institutions and funds that provide microfinance in circumstances where banks do not operate can offer a solution to those entrepreneurs.

Cordaid invests in microfinance institutions and funds that offer loans, guarantees and capital stock to people and businesses that have no other options. We do so in regions that involve a greater risk than other investors are willing to take.

Such investments require financial expertise as well as the best possible knowledge of the actual, local circumstances. To acquire such knowledge, Cordaid conducts thorough risk analyses and studies. It also offers tailor-made investments that fit the capacity and needs of the institutions and funds that provide microfinance. And, finally, it strives for insight into the microfinance organizations’ business plans and their client protection principles.

Cordaid has been investing in cost-effective entrepreneurship for over 16 years. Its capital amounts to 70 million euros, which has been invested in over 100 microfinance organizations in 12 countries.

Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza,

Conserving biodiversity is central to the mission of IUCN. Biodiversity is fundamental to addressing some of the world’s greatest challenges such as climate change, sustainable development and food security.

To deliver conservation and sustainability at both the global and local level, IUCN builds on its strengths in the following areas:
  • Science – 11,000 experts setting global standards in their fields, for example, the definitive international standard for species extinction risk – the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™.
  • Action – hundreds of conservation projects all over the world from the local level to those involving several countries, all aimed at the sustainable management of biodiversity and natural resources.
  • Influence – through the collective strength of more than 1,200 government and non-governmental Member organizations, IUCN influences international environmental conventions, policies and laws.

Humanistisch Instituut voor Ontwikkelingssamenwerking (International Humanist Institute for Cooperation with Developing Countries)

Sustainable economic development, together with civil society building, is one of the two pillars upon which Hivos bases its work. Through the Green Entrepreneurship programme, we support socially responsible and economically viable entrepreneurship by and for rural men and women and small and medium enterprises, and facilitate methods of production that do not destabilise the environment.

Green Entrepreneurship invests in six key focal areas:

  • (1) Sustainable Agriculture, Biodiversity and Climate Change;
  • (2) Sustainable Producer Entrepreneurship and Markets;
  • (3) Building Microfinance Institutions;
  • (4) Financing Rural Entrepreneurship;
  • (5) Renewable Energy in Practice; and
  • (6) Carbon Finance.

The programme collaborates with national governments, the private sector and other (inter)national actors whose support for pro-poor and environment-friendly development is crucial.

It supports entrepreneurial rural people with technical and skills training to engage in more productive, diverse and sustainable means of production, and facilitates their access to capital for investment and to markets.
